§ 05 · Workshop standards

Three rules, written down.

We don’t solicit testimonials. Here are the published standards we work to instead.

01

Eight-way hand-tied springs.

Coils tied by hand in eight directions with Italian twine, knotted at every crossing. The seat compresses evenly under load and recovers without sag for fifteen to twenty years of daily use.

Reference

Method documented in Boling, J., Upholstering for Everyone (1953); still the bench standard.

02

Kiln-dried hardwood frames.

Frames built from kiln-dried maple, oak or birch — moisture content under 12% — joined with mortise-and-tenon, glued, screwed and corner-blocked. Pine and softwood frames are rejected on intake.

Reference

ASTM D6435-12 standard for furniture frame stability.

03

Double-rub-rated upholstery fabric.

Wyzenbeek abrasion test minimum 15,000 double-rubs for residential pieces; 30,000+ for any seat that takes daily use. Contract-grade fabrics specified by name on every quote.

Reference

ASTM D4157, Wyzenbeek method.
